Purpose of this content
Everything published on this site — practice area pages, city pages, articles, and the Learn hubs — is general legal information about Texas law. It is written to help Texans understand how a Texas court is likely to approach a problem before they speak with a lawyer. It is not legal advice, and reading it does not create an attorney-client relationship with Winfrey Law Firm, PLLC.
Attorney review
Substantive legal content is reviewed by James Derick Winfrey, the attorney responsible for the content of this website, before it is published. Mr. Winfrey is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and practices from the firm's Cypress and Llano offices. Pages that have not completed attorney review are not published.
Sourcing standards
- Primary Texas authority first: the Texas Family Code, Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Property Code, Texas Estates Code, Texas Government Code, the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, and published Texas appellate opinions.
- Federal authority where it controls — for example, the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 matters.
- Court and agency sources for procedure: the district clerks of Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Waller, Llano, and Burnet counties, the Office of Court Administration, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.
- We do not cite California or other out-of-state law as if it applied in Texas. Where another state's rule is mentioned for contrast, it is labeled as such.
Accuracy, dates, and updates
Texas statutes change after each legislative session, and dollar thresholds such as the child support cap and bankruptcy exemption amounts are adjusted periodically. Pages state the version of the law they describe where the distinction matters, and are reviewed on an ongoing schedule. If a page is out of date, we correct it rather than silently remove it.
Use of drafting tools
The firm uses research and drafting tools, including AI-assisted drafting, to produce first drafts of informational content. No AI-generated draft is published without attorney review and editing for legal accuracy. Responsibility for every published page rests with the firm and its reviewing attorney, not with any tool.
What we will not publish
- Guarantees or predictions of a specific outcome in any case.
- Invented case results, testimonials, reviews, credentials, or statistics.
- Fee quotes presented as applicable to a matter we have not evaluated.
Any case results or client comments that do appear are accurate as to the matter described. Prior results do not guarantee a similar outcome; every case turns on its own facts and on the court where it is filed.
